Squad depth was undoubtedly the topic on everyone’s lip at Bayern Munich coming into the 2025/26 season, and understandably so. Die Rekordmeister were forced to start their campaign without the likes of
Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala, Hiroki Ito and Tom Bischof. Light in the attack as well after the departures of Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman, it seemed like a risky decision to go into a new season without significant reinforcements. However, following Bayern’s flying start to the season, it seems like the decision to only make key additions has payed off, for now.
Vincent Kompany addressed the matter following Bayern’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Werder Bremen.
“There was a lot of talk at the start of the season about our squad depth, but for me the most important thing is to really have 100% confidence in every single player,” explained Kompany in an interview captured by @iMiaSanMia. “When someone is out and I have to replace him with someone else, I don’t have the feeling that I have to expect any less. Today was a good day for Tom Bischof. We have to use the entire squad and rely on all players.”
One thing Kompany is not getting enough praise for is his ability to get performances out of players that were deemed surplus to requirements come the start of the season. Tom Bischof is a decent example. After confusion on where or if he would fit in at Bayern, one performance has silenced the doubt. An even better example is Sacha Boey. While far from perfect, Kompany has turned a player who was on the fringes just a few match days ago into a solid first team contributor, a testimony to the Belgian coach’s man management abilities.
All that being said, Bayern’s attack is still very light. The Bavarians have perhaps been lucky to have not sustained any injuries to their front line. But would the team perform this well if they lost key attackers and didn’t have adequate replacements? Fortunately, that’s a question Bayern have not had to answer up until this point.
Bayern Munich was the home side in the Bundesliga on Friday when Werder Bremen came to town.
The Bavarians decimated the visitors 4-0 in a game that was never really close. Bayern Munich was relentless and dominant in every aspect of the match. It is not as if Werder Bremen did not try, but the players just could not match up with the machine that was Bayern Munich.
