The top-ranked and top-seeded UConn women’s basketball team began the Big East Tournament with a dominant 84-39 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Despite an off shooting night from star guard Azzi Fudd (10 points), the Huskies controlled the game on both ends of the floor. Serah Williams led the way with 14 points, shooting an efficient 7-for-8 from the field while adding eight rebounds. KK Arnold and Sarah Strong each reached double-figures as well with 11 points apiece.
The defense put in a stifling performance, allowing just 18 first half points while holding the Hoyas without a double-digit scorer. Georgetown committed 23 turnovers, which UConn turned into easy scoring opportunities, steadily building its lead throughout the game.
After the Hoyas scored the first four points, the Huskies responded with 19 of the next 20. In the second quarter, UConn missed its first shot but then made its next seven, racking up an 8-0 run along the way.
At halftime, the Huskies led 47-18. While both teams got off to a slow start out of the break, the Huskies eventually woke up and got their offense going again. Georgetown didn’t. The Hoyas managed just four points in the third quarter as UConn extended its lead to 69-22. After an uneventful final frame, the Huskies came away with a 46-point win.
With the victory, UConn improves to 32-0 and advances to the Big East Tournament semifinals. The Huskies will face the winner of 4-seed Marquette and 5-seed Creighton on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
