Top Pitching Performance of the Week
Freddy Peralta continues to mow down hitters this season, as he made another great start against the Angels this week. Across six frames, Peralta allowed just one run (a solo homer) and struck out a team-high (and personal season-high) 10 batters in another win for him. Honorable mentions to Quinn Priester and Brandon Woodruff, who also turned in solid starts, as well as Abner Uribe, Aaron Ashby, and Jared Koenig, who all had great weeks from the bullpen, combining for 10 scoreless innings.
Top Hitting Performance of the Week
There are a few solid candidates for this spot, as eight players had at least five hits and two more had four hits in what was a pretty balanced week offensively. We’ll go with Sal Frelick, though, as he led the team with two homers and two doubles (accounting for all four of his hits this week), adding three walks as he slashed .267/.368/.800 with five RBIs and four runs scored. Frelick, who entered the season known almost exclusively for his speed and defense, has quietly put together a great season, slashing .294/.359/.417 with 12 homers, 20 doubles, three triples, and 19 steals.
Injury Notes & Roster Moves
- The injury bug continues to hit Milwaukee’s rotation, as the Brewers lost two more starting pitchers this week. First, it was Jose Quintana, who hit the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a left calf strain. Brandon Woodruff, who’s faced injuries for the last several years, then went on the shelf on Sunday with a right lat strain. Both of them are eligible to return in the postseason, though it’s unclear how severe Woodruff’s injury is at this time.
- Reliever Nick Mears returned from a minimum stay on the IL, with Quintana’s IL stint the corresponding move.
- LHP Robert Gasser, who has spent the last two months at Triple-A Nashville after returning from Tommy John surgery last summer, was recalled to make the start on Sunday against the Cardinals after Woodruff went on the IL.
- In a slightly more minor move, LHP Bruce Zimmermann’s contract was selected from Triple-A Nashville on Saturday. To make space on the 40-man roster, RHP Joel Payamps was designated for assignment for the second time this season. Last time, he cleared waivers and was outrighted to Nashville. We’ll see where he ends up this time.
