Harry Kane missed his first Bundesliga penalty this season in Bayern Munich’s 1-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg. Replays revealed the Englishman slipped just before striking the ball, ultimately sending the ball into the stands.
While the slip appeared to be the culprit of the Bayern striker’s uncharacteristic penalty miss, footage caught by Sky later revealed Wolfsburg defender, Jeanuël Belocian, scuffing the penalty spot ahead of Kane’s strike.
Vincent Kompany was not happy with Belocian’s actions,
insisting that these incidents shouldn’t be happening, but empathized with the defender, citing Wolfsburg;s situation as the cause for the unsportsmanlike conduct.
In Bayern Munich’s post match press conference, a reporter went on to question whether Kompany and Bayern should have been prepared for such a situation.
“When Argentina get a penalty, you see several players shielding Messi and the penalty spot so something like that doesn’t happen,” explained the reporter (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Is that not something you should be considering?”
Kompany conceded a lack of attention to detail and, still sour from Wednesday’s controversial officiating, couldn’t help take a low-key dig at UEFA.
“If we had gotten a penalty against Paris on Wednesday, we’d have had 2 or 3 guys there,” declared the Belgian manager. “It’s sometimes these little details that make a difference.”
Kompany’s words cut deep. In the Bundesliga, you don’t have to focus on every minor rule breach. In the Champions League, you have to keep your eye on every detail.
