In a controversial decision, Julian Nagelsmann is set to nominate Manuel Neuer to the Germany squad for this summer’s World Cup. Neuer has been retired from the national team since Euro 2024, but appears primed to retake the #1 spot in goal for the tournament in North America.
A decision that has been welcomed by many, but there is an emotionally important line to consider in this decision, as this means Baumann will lose his spot as Germany’s starting goalkeeper.
“If he and the national team coach
were to decide to do that, I would very much welcome it. Even though I would feel sorry for Oliver Baumann,” Hoeneß commented on Germany’s goalkeeper dilemma, as per t-online’s Julian Buhl and captured via @iMiaSanMia.
Hoeneß makes a really good point here. Baumann has been the goalkeeper for some time now in Germany and has done a serviceable job as well. However, with a poor run of form in recent months for Baumann, there is certainly an argument that Neuer is more prepared for this World Cup. It would be devastating for Baumann but sometimes feelings must be put aside for the greater good of the team.
