Lennart Karl might officially be back.
Okay, it might be a bit premature to start beating the drums already, but the Bayern Munich starlet’s second half showing against Atletico Madrid is exactly the type of performance fans have been raring to see.
Involvement in both ends of the game. Passing with purpose. Fighting for the ball. Shaking off the dust.
His industry earned him a fantastic goal: a delightful chip over Jan Oblak.
In the Champions League postgame presser (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Man
of the Match Konrad Laimer waxed lyrical about Karl: “I’m really happy for the boy. He stays calm, he wants to improve, he works hard and today he was rewarded for it. He showed that real fighting spirit.”
Compared to the first half, Karl’s second half performance was certainly a breath of fresh air. What has been impressive of late is how the youngster keeps his head down and grinds in silence. Less showboating, more purpose. And that is exactly what the fans and management want to see.
“He tracks back, wins the ball back and then somehow manages to smash it into the net. He’s young and still has a lot to learn,” Laimer continued. “He still needs to take another step forward, but he’s on a fantastic path. I’m absolutely delighted for him, and I think he has a great career ahead of him.”
Konnie might be right. After all the media attention and that infamous interview involving a certain mafia club from Spain, Karl’s reputation and on-pitch performances took a dip. It seems like the young man is keen to steady that ship and get back on top.
Which is perhaps right where Karl belongs. This is a good start.
