There is no denying that Roma has a certain allure that other clubs can’t match. Despite the trials and travails they face each summer, Roma remains an attractive destination for up-and-coming footballers. As one of the crown jewels of Western civilization, the city of Roma sells itself, while the merits of Gian Piero Gasperini’s brand of football could tempt any attacking talent.
This elixir has allowed the Giallorossi to remain competitive for some of Europe’s best and brightest talents over the years.
While it doesn’t always work in their favor, it seems Antonio Nusa has fallen under their spell. The €60 million-rated RB Leipzig winger has emerged as Roma’s preferred target for their left-wing vacancy.
Despite the mutual attraction between the two sides, Nusa’s price tag remains out of reach for Roma. However, according to the Corriere dello Sport, Nusa’s desire to join Gasperini could swing the deal in the Giallorossi’s favor.
Regarding Nusa, the player is trying to force an exit from RB Leipzig in order to finally move closer to joining Roma. Gasperini’s project has intrigued him, and the forward and coach have already spoken, reaching an understanding that goes beyond financial considerations. The man who regularly supplies Erling Haaland with chances for Norway would be given free rein in Roma’s attacking midfield.
He would start on the left, with Dybala on the right and Malen through the middle. Then there is the Castro option, the uncertainty surrounding Soulé (if he isn’t sold), the return of Pellegrini (only the signature is still missing on that agreement), and the addition of another young winger, such as Torino’s 2007-born Cacciamani. That is the attacking setup Gian Piero Gasperini is envisioning as he pieces together a potentially devastating blend of quality and unpredictability.
Any such plans, however, could unravel because of Leipzig’s demands. The German club wants €55 million to let Nusa leave, while Premier League interest is also growing louder. Roma does not want to go beyond €45 million, especially because, as we explain elsewhere, the club also needs to strengthen at right-back and sign a backup for Wesley on the left. Bahoya of Eintracht Frankfurt and PSG’s Mbaye remain two alternatives to monitor if a deal for Nusa becomes too complicated.
We’ve certainly seen many similar updates over the years, only to see the player join another club. Still, if he’s as important to Gasperini’s plans as this article suggests, and Nusa really—and I mean, really—pushes for this move, the clubs should be able to find a happy medium; perhaps a healthy sell-on fee or the inclusion of an U-18 prospect.
