Joel Pereira: 5
Couldn’t do anything about the second or third goals, with the second looping over him from a wicked bounce at close range, and the third being smashed home when he was left alone in front of two men.
Still seems to be having communication issues with his backline, as we saw in the game against Bromley, leading to a few shaky moments with Paudie O’Connor in particular.
Did do some things well – made a pair of good high claims in the box, and was alert to get off his line as second-half stoppage time
began, snatching the ball away from the onrushing attacker with a brave dive.
Udoka Godwin Malife: 6
Clearly a good one-on-one defender, with Luton Town mostly choosing to go down the other flank for many of their attacks.
Got back well at the end to cut out a potential Hatters winner, but couldn’t get close enough to stop the shot that started off the sequence for the winner.
Paudie O’Connor: 5
Opened his foul account for the season early, with some classic manhandling of the winger he had stepped out to pressure.
Made some decent punched passes into the opposition half but ended up hitting it long a little too often, leading to a passing accuracy below 50% in Luton’s half.
Benn Ward: 5
A tale of two halves for the January signing. Looked good in the first half as Reading found themselves on the front foot. Capable of sending the ball down into the channel for Daniel Kyerewaa to chase.
Struggled a lot in the second half with the speed of the play around him, especially when Luton chose to press up high. Lost the ball limply in his own half on the hour mark, leading to a chance for the visitors.
Reading’s game plan sees them put the ball around the wings and half spaces, meaning they don’t always have a central midfield options available for Ward to hit – that appeared to cause the returning centre-back a world of problems.
Jeriel Dorsett: 4
Simply not ready to play today. Struggled with Luton’s attackers, often finding himself pulled out of position.
Unfortunately on the scene (though not entirely to blame) for both the first Luton goals. For the first, he couldn’t get close enough to his man to stop the shot, allowing a yard in front of him from which the striker curled home his effort.
For the second, Dorsett attempted to head clear, but could only find the centre of the box, allowing the shot back into Pereira. It may be harsh to ask for more from a clearance, but if you clear the ball into a dangerous place, you get dangerous results.
Lewis Wing: 4
A very quiet day for Wing, with the skipper failing to reach 60 touches. Looked for space to shoot on the edge of the box on the right side a few times but was charged down when he found it.
Turned over possession of the ball to Luton 20 times today, whether through misplaced passes, clearances, or having it poked away. Lost more than half of his duels and didn’t win it in the air once.
A start of the season to forget for the skipper.
Andy Rinomhota: 5
More active than Wing alongside him, especially in the second half.
Struggled a bit with the pace but found his rhythm before the skipper did. As evidence, Rinomhota was able to progressively carry the ball more than twice as much as Wing today, giving Reading some semblance of thrust in the middle at least in the first half.
Faded badly in the second half, and was mostly consigned to defending on the edge of his box.
Kyreece Lisbie: 7
Started the game like a man who’s wanted to be in Reading for the past eight months. All over his full-back, giving him nightmares that contributed to both the first and third Reading goals.
Covered a lot of ground to steal the ball away for the third. Lisbie was potentially lucky to avoid a foul, but took his chance well, driving to the box and setting up Marriott to complete his hat-trick.
Retains the ball in the opposition half well, with none of his passing super incisive, but all of it on point even in the attacking half. Looks like an absolutely steal and I’ve no idea how much we paid for him.
Josh Stokes: 5
Started the season as Leam Richardson’s hybrid 10/striker in the press role as Reading shaped up out of possession in a 4-4-2.
Managed to interact well with Lisbie but couldn’t really connect with the other players around him today.
Struggled to get into the game when Reading were on the ball and made only six successful forward passes into the Luton half, one for every 10 minutes he was on the field.
Did well to hustle between the two shapes, but was a light touch defensively today, losing most of his duels and being dribbled past three times.
Daniel Kyerewaa: 6
Looked especially dangerous when Reading had opportunities to counter-attack in the first half, driving at his full-back and getting two shots away at the end of the first half.
Got in the ear of the full-back as well, winding him up enough that he came back with some words in the half-time tunnel.
Jack Marriott: 9
What can you say about that first-half performance? Just insert angels chorusing in your head and that will give you the general feel of the experience.
Showed how eager he’s been for the season to start, nipping in early to prevent Reading suffering a nightmare start to 2026/27, equalising by latching onto a weak back-pass.
Intercepted the ball as Luton were trying to build from the back for his second goal before driving forward and finding the bottom corner. Finished his hat-trick with the simplest of the three finishes, slotting home.
Became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the first game of the season since Dider Drogba in 2011 vs West Bromwich Albion.
Withdrawn after the hour mark with his fitness being managed.

Randell Williams: 5
Oddly tried as the number 10 when Reading needed more energy and guile in midfield.
Unsurprisingly, playing him out of position was not to his strengths, and he struggled to have much impact in the 10 spot, and was moved out to the right after Lisbie went off, where he looked a little better with time to run at his defender.
Jacob Brown: 4
It is just a little concerning when the away fans cheer you bringing on one of your substitutes… Brown, of Luton in recent years, will need to do better in the weeks going forward to not end up in the same category with Reading fans.
Won a few balls that were pumped forward for him, but not able to do much else as Luton dominated possession in the second half.
Paddy Lane: 4
Played the entirety of preseason at left-back, so where does he get his first minutes of the season? Winger. Excellent planning. Touched the ball six times and lost it on two of those touches.
Charlie Savage: 5
Brought on late to try to add a spark to Reading’s attack but just not able to produce the same chance-producing numbers he did against Bromley a week ago.
Unfortunately not able to find a killer pass, with most of his completed efforts going backwards.
Liam Fraser: N/A
Put on with a minute to go but found himself on for 10 minutes after nine went up on the injury-time board.
Found himself with Reading’s final good chance of the game when it skittered to him in the box late on. Couldn’t get his left foot around it though, bouncing it wide off the front of his ankle.
