The weather was sloppy, LJ Martin went out early, BYU’s offense struggled mightily, but BYU found a way to win in a 17-10 win over TCU Saturday evening in Fort Worth.
Bear Bachmeier had a paltry 62 passing yards, but had a 9-yard TD run in the second quarter and a 21-yard TD rumble in the fourth quarter where he bounced off TCU defenders to seal the game. BYU finished with 216 total yards, including 66 rushing yards from Bear Bachmeier. LJ Martin left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury
and didn’t return.
BYU won the turnover battle 1-0 and the defense shined the entire night. BYU held the Horned Frogs to 259 yards, and the 1 turnover was an interception return that flipped the field and led to BYU’s lone first half score.
BYU’s offense without LJ Martin was certainly worrisome, and BYU’s inability to throw the ball down the field when Bear has to throw could be part of their downfall in bigger games. A-Rod’s over reliance on screens and other play calls could be scrutinized, but on a macro level I believe he called the right game. BYU’s offense couldn’t do anything, and Roderick called a game that mitigated turnover risk and kept TCU’s offense from starting in BYU territory. TCU had to sustain drives, and they couldn’t do it. Ball game. BYU played complementary football.
BYU moves to 4-0 on the season and next hosts Iowa State Friday night in Provo.
