If the Los Angeles Rams feel that their tight end room is too crowded, the Green Bay Packers are a natural trade partner with an immense need at the position. Someone like Davis Allen or Colby Parkinson could be an obvious trade piece for the Rams to send to the Packers, as Green Bay deals with a litany of injuries at the position and desperately needs depth there.
But do the two teams see it that way?
Who the Rams have at tight end
The Rams have five tight ends destined to make a roster this season:
- Colby Parkinson
- Tyler Higbee
- Davis Allen
- Terrance Ferguson
- Max Klare
In addition, the team is fond of undrafted free agent Mark Redman.
The Rams may be comfortable keeping five tight ends, but if they do, that means that someone like Klare probably spends most of the season on the bench, if not being entirely inactive most weeks.
And though Higbee would seem to be the most obvious choice to part ways with given his age, the Rams just signed him to a two-year pact, meaning that he’s going to be around for at least one.
Parkinson was the team’s best tight end last season, but if they like Ferguson and Klare enough, he also makes the most sense to trade for a decent return.
That leaves Allen, the most obvious “overstock” at the position.
The former fifth-round pick may be good enough to be a team’s TE2, and he’s entering a contract year, but the Rams won’t have him better than a TE4. Barring injury, he may be the odd man out.
Who the Packers need
The Packers are getting back star tight end Tucker Kraft, a player expected to sign a big contract extension any day now. But Luke Musgrave is expected to start the season on PUP.
The Packers recently had just three healthy tight ends on the roster.
With Matt LaFleur calling plays, it could make the most sense for him to get a tight end off of his old team’s roster moving into Week 1.
What the trade could look like
Allen may not have a ton of trade value, but perhaps Green Bay would give a fourth-round pick given their desperation. Maybe a fifth. Maybe a pick swap. Or maybe a player.
Parkinson is a little bit overpaid, but could certainly be a weapon for Jordan Love immediately. Maybe he’d also command something similar in trade.
If the Rams can get something for a position they have too much of though, anything in return for one them could be too good of a deal to pass up.
