Texas Longhorns redshirt sophomore running back CJ Baxter has missed the last four games with a hamstring injury, but may be nearing a return.
According to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian during his Monday press conference, Baxter “made a lot of progress” last week and was able to practice on Monday. Baxter was not listed as out for Saturday’s win over Kentucky in Lexington until the Friday injury update, itself an indication of progress for the 6’1, 227-pounder.
“Hopefully we can get Cedric more
into the fold,” Sarkisian said.
Limited t0 24 carries for 110 yards this year by the injury sustained on the first play of scrimmage against UTEP, Baxter could bolster a rushing attack that has been inconsistent this season, including a subpar 15-carry, 50-yard effort for the running backs against Kentucky that featured a long run of only eight yards.
Struggles along the offensive line have been a significant factor in those struggles, but pairing the 227-pound Baxter with 194-pound junior running back Quintrevion Wisner would at least allow Texas to get some more mass on the field at the position in an effort to pick up more yards after contact.
