After this week’s loss to Oklahoma, the Deacs really need a win tonight against the Mountaineers—Wake will have just 1 more chance after this game to pick up a significant non-conference win when they play a very good Vanderbilt team in a couple of weeks. This one is going to be a clash of styles, as West Virginia ranks 339th in tempo while the Deacs are one of the fastest teams in the nation at 43rd. Expect WVU to try to slow the game down and turn it into a rock fight—the Mountaineers currently have the 22nd best defense in the nation according to KenPom, so the lower the final score, the better their chances are of coming at on top. The biggest thing I’m looking at in this game is how the Deacs bounce back after their first truly disappointing loss of the season—how the team responds will tell us a lot about what we should expect in conference play.
