Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today, we’re talking about Carter Arey. Don’t know who that is? Let me tell you.
By now, you’ve probably seen footage or stories going around about the Mizzou fan who opted to kick a potential $25,000 winning field goal at the kU sideline rather than the Faurot uprights.
Whether or not you thought the stunt was funny depends on largely your affiliation with either school or, potentially, your age.But as it turns out, there’s much more of a story here than just some random fan pulling a prank. After
all, the kicker of the “field goal” was none other than Mizzou Wheelchair Basketball legend and Professional Adaptive Golfer Carter Arey… if you know, you know. I had the pleasure of filming Arey and his teammates while I was in school, and the team was the nicest group of guys, especially to a young journalism student coming to film them at a morning practice.
The Athletic (yeah, yeah, subscription only) did a great feature on Arey’s stunt, and you should check it out if you haven’t had the chance yet. It’s a cool story about a kansas-hating Mizzou great who now cements himself in yet another aspect of Tiger lore. Congrats, Carter, on being rad.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
We all like Bill Connelly around here, and in Bill’s SP+ rankings going into the weekend Kansas was ranked 26th.
22 through 30 reads like this: TCU, Auburn, Texas Tech, Clemson, Kansas, Iowa State, BYU, Arkansas, Arizona State. If you swap any of those teams in for the Jayhawks this past weekend, this is still a huge win early in the season.
It’s only fun to give kU credit for being good after we’ve beaten them.
Mizzou’s secondary struggled with positioning at times, leading to big time plays for the Jayhawks. On one play, Kansas WR Levi Wentz burnt Mizzou’s ‘STAR’ position, Jalen Catalon. On another play, Daniels attempted to find Henderson deep but barely overthrew him; it would’ve been a touchdown.
As Drinkwitz said after the game, you don’t crown anyone after two weeks. Glad to hear the team is focused on getting better even after a big win.
Coming off a shutout loss to Illinois, the Tigers emerged from kickoff with an urgency in this match. Junior defender Mia Yang found the back of the net in the third minute of play, assisted by sophomore forward Emily Derucki. This was Yang’s second goal of the season and Derucki’s team-leading fourth assist of the season.
As an Arsenal fan, let me just say… love a corner kick goal. They’re the best.
- Over at Rock M+, we’re talking about Pro Football Focus scores from kansas, how 5-star basketball recruit Toni Bryant’s official visit went, the chances of getting College Gameday to campus against South Carolina, and so much more. Thanks to everyone who has joined us over there this season!
