good morning gang
We’re nearing the end of the month, which means it’s time to check in all the EFL Championship. It’s the best football league on the planet, and I will always cover it so long as I am your hoddler-in-chief.
There’s so much to unpack here, but for Tottenham purposes I think the best route into this division is through Big Willy Lankshear. He plays for Middlesbrough, of course, who are top of the league.
Lanksher has scored 11 goals in 12 appearances so far this season, and currently
is the leading goal-scorer in the league. Boro have been right about there in the promotion hunt the last two season, but they look different this year. I attribute that to Big Willy.
This is a hell of a race. West Ham should compete for the other automatics spot, and I’m not counting out Wolvs. West Brom should be competitive after a challenging 2025-26 season. But keep an eye on Boro who could be the first team to clinch promotion.
Otherwise there are a lot of other storylines to follow, especially if you’re looking after the expanded playoff push. Six point separate QPR (8th) from Charlton (19th), and I’m bearish on both.
I don’t see a world in which the seventh- or eigth-best team gets promoted, and the expanded format makes little sense to me. I’ll still take a Millwall or even a Bristol City before a Birmingham, QPR or Rovers.
Top eight:
- Boro (25 Pts)
- Swansea (23 Pts)
- West Ham (22 Pts)
- Wolves (21 Pts)
- WBA (21 Pts)
- Southampton (20 Pts)
- Birmingham (20 Pts)
- QPR (20 Pts)
Bottom three:
- Burnley (8 Pts)
- Derby (7 Pts)
- Preston (5 Pts)
