Stars on the Dallas Cowboys are expected to perform. To quote the great Uncle Ben, with great power comes great responsibility.
This “great power” is generally conveyed in NFL terms by high draft picks or players on big-time contracts. If the Cowboys are giving up this “power” to players then the players in question are expected to elevate the standing and production of the team as a whole. This concept is a tale as old as time.
These players are essentially tasked with raising the ceiling of the team,
but what about the floor? Value here is determined by the rest of the roster, and if players from throughout it are able to rise themselves then the value of the floor rises with it.
DeMarvion Overshown has the potential to change the Cowboys season
An argument exists that the most catalytic performances on the Cowboys roster come from players who raise that floor. We expect the likes of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Quinnen Williams, Caleb Downs (even as a rookie), and those sorts of players to be herculean on a week-by-week basis. The lower the floor beneath them though, the greater they have to soar to raise the mean of it all.
Imagine if someone like DeMarvion Overshown plays like a superstar, though. This would be someone closer to the floor of the roster elevating it so that the requirement from the stars above would not be as immense.
The reason that this feels less impossible than other ideas is because we have seen it before. Prior to his horrific injury late in the 2024 season, Overshown was looking like someone to put in that superstar group. He was evolving into one of the better, more dynamic, and in the spirit of this discussion, more catalytic members of the team at large, well beyond just the defense. If he can find anything close to that then the work that has to be done from the top-notch players is lessened.
At the moment there are really three points of contention on the Cowboys roster (in terms of semi-serious levels of potential panic): linebacker, cornerback, and left tackle. If we consider the top starting options there (we’ll include two corners) then we have Overshown, DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel, and Tyler Guyton.
Of these four players, which of them do you feel carries the most potential to become a superstar-level player? While DaRon Bland has been that in the past, it sort of feels more difficult to see that once again than it would for even someone like Overshown who we all agree it would take a lot to be the case for.
To be clear, any one of these players taking a significant step would raise the proverbial floor of the team in a way that would make success all the more attainable for the group. These are the players who can most significantly alter the future of the season.
Who else should be on the list?
