The current road trip has not been kind to the Colorado Rockies. They have scored just three runs and have now been shut out in back-to-back games. Needing just two wins to avoid the worst record in MLB’s Modern Era, the Rockies will need to find a way to get their offense rolling.
Colorado also needs a rebound start for tonight’s starter, Tanner Gordon (5-6, 6.60 ERA). After four strong outings to finish August, including three quality starts, Gordon struggled in his first start of September which,
coincidentally, came against the San Diego Padres. He allowed six runs on six hits, including three home runs, in just 3 2/3 innings at Coors Field. Gordon tallied five strikeouts but struggled with the placement of his pitches, and the Padres punished the mistakes.
JP Sears (8-10, 5.01 ERA) makes his fourth start since joining the Padres in the trade that brought Mason Miller over from the Athletics. Sears hasn’t seen much of a difference in performance with the move to San Diego, owning a 5.52 ERA over 14 2/3 innings across his three starts. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his last outing, allowing four runs on five hits, including a pair of home runs. He has allowed a home run in each of his last seven starts this season, and hasn’t had his strikeout stuff working with San Diego.
In some roster news, the Rockies have sent Michael Toglia back to Triple-A and recalled Blaine Crim. The Rockies picked up Crim off waivers from the Texas Rangers at the start of August. In 26 games with the Albuquerque Isotopes, he slashed .273/.360/.424 with three home runs. He took 11 at-bats with the Rangers early this season across five games, striking out six times against one walk.
