Doesn’t get much better than this on a summer Sunday to go back and watch some old Mario Lemieux highlights. Lemieux was a menace of the likes that may never be seen again. In 1988-89, Lemieux scored an NHL record 13 shorthanded goals in a single season. He had 10 the prior year and would lead the league in SHG one more time in 1995-96 with eight.
The game is so different now but that’s a thing of beauty. Best
is defenseman Larry Murphy scoring from right in front of the net, there was no need for any sense of positional responsibilities or defensive structure when Lemieux was out there hunting pucks and making plays. The fact the Penguins had one less player on the ice didn’t even matter back then.
Jesse meant the team’s 20th SHG in the post below, but close enough.
Even though this was apparently video captured by a potato, let’s play a game of how many penalties would be called on this play by Quebec defenseman Marc Fortier if it happened today.
Lemieux highlights got some shine on social media this week, Jeff Veillette encapsulated the Mario vs. Wayne debate in a succinct manner about as good as it has be done.
