Safe to say that Glendale isn’t much of a contender in the Arizona Fall League. They dropped another game in blowout fashion, one which was sloppy at best due to the pitching staff allowing 13 walks. Braves representatives did provide bright spots, however, most notably with Tate Southisene putting out an early breakout showing. Southisene led off in the first inning with a walk, then stole second base to give Glendale an early scoring chance. He would advance in on consecutive ground
outs, scoring the game’s first run and allowing the Desert Dogs to claim their only lead of the game. The game took a quick trip downhill after, but Southisene continued to be the key contributor to the Glendale attack. In his next trip to the plate he laced his first AFL extra base hit with a one-out double, though the team around him failed to bring him home from there. Another walk and an infield single added up to four total times on base for Southisene. The AFL tends to have wild pitching and Southisene seems fully prepared with the patience needed to wait out the run environment. He has continued to show the patient approach at the plate that got him such an aggressive call up to Double-A this season, and hasn’t shown even a little rust with his approach even after a long layoff. Southisene should continue to get massive playing time as the AFL season wears on, and if he continues to play like this it will lead to him gaining even more notoriety nationally. Logan Samuels gave the team a needed multi-inning relief appearance in this game and was the only Glendale pitcher to not allow a run. It wasn’t the prettiest with his two walks allowed, but he found success with getting whiffs on his solid secondary offerings and cobbled together three strikeouts.
