Bayern Munich walked away from Freiburg with a 3-1 victory, and the final statistics show a side that was considerably more threatening going forward, even without totally dominating possession.
Bayern Munich finished with just 56% possession compared to Freiburg’s 44%, but the Bavarians made their time on the ball count. Both teams registered 17 shots, yet Bayern put nine on target, while Freiburg managed just five. That difference was reflected in the expected goals, with FC Bayern recording 2.94
xG compared to SC Freiburg’s 0.99.
The biggest indicator of Bayern Munich’s attacking superiority was the number of quality opportunities created. Kompany’s side generated five big chances, while Freiburg managed just one. FC Bayern missed two big chances, but still found the net three times.
Bayern Munich also completed 441 accurate passes at an 84% success rate, compared to Freiburg’s 333 at 82%. The visitors had more of the ball, but FC Bayern was more productive with their possession.
Both sides recorded 23 touches in the opposition box, while Bayern committed 11 fouls to Freiburg’s nine.
Ultimately, Bayern didn’t need to wholly dominate possession to dominate the important attacking numbers. Three goals, a significant xG advantage, and nine shots on target made for a productive afternoon on the road (even if the final 10 minutes were nerve-wracking).
