The Yankees are the “away” team at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday for the final time of the 2025 season. On Tuesday, the Bombers belted a whopping nine home runs against the Tampa Bay Rays’ pitching staff, tying their own franchise record from earlier this year while easily hitting a high point in this often-difficult second half of the season. They’re now wrapping up the quick two-game trip to their spring training home against Drew Rasmussen, with Cam Schlittler hoping to get them through
it on the bump.
Schlittler is making his seventh start of the season for New York, and is on the heels of some solid performances as he continues to carve out a role with the club. The 24-year-old righty has completed five innings in each of his last three starts, with his last coming against the Twins, when he allowed just one run on two hits while striking out six. He faced the Rays at the end of July, and was hit around a bit — tagged for seven hits and three runs across 4.1 innings of work.
The Yankees lineup will be taking on 30-year-old Drew Rasmussen, who is quietly one of the more consistent and successful starting pitchers around. Although he has spent plenty of time on the shelf, he boasts a 2.72 ERA and 3.03 FIP to back it up over the course of 337 frames since 2022. That includes a would-be career-best 2.60 ERA this season in 117.2 innings, which earned him his first career All-Star berth. The Tampa Bay righty is coming off of back-to-back six inning efforts, in which he’s allowed just one total run and struck out nine. He last faced the Yankees (and Schlittler) last month, when he allowed a pair of runs across five solid innings.
The Yankees lineup is changed a bit from it’s Derby-esque performance on Tuesday, with Giancarlo Stanton sitting out on the heels of his multi-homer day, Austin Wells returning to his post behind the plate with Ben Rice covering first, and Aaron Judge remaining at DH. The Rays have some changes at the bottom, with the lineup still anchored by the likes of Yandy Díaz, Brandon Lowe, and Junior Caminero.
