The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero broke the news that the New York Giants are trading for Minnesota Vikings backup J.J. McCarthy.
Reports surfaced on Sunday that the Giants were interested in San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones, but there were three other quarterbacks: McCarthy, Jones, Jimmy Garoppolo, Justin Fields, and Gardner Minshew.
The Giants’ offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, had a chance to select Jones in 2021 while coaching the Chicago Bears, but passed. He passed again on Jones, this time
for another first-rounder who should never have been selected that high to begin with.
The Giants gave up a fifth-round pick for McCarthy, who was drafted in 2024. We’ll never know what the 49ers’ asking price is for Jones when he was on the hypothetical trade block last year, but we may find out if there are any other QB-needy teams during the next month and a half.
It’ll likely take an injury at the position, or a team that wasn’t a contender emerges. Until then, Jones remains on the 49ers’ roster.
