Manchester City travel to bogey team Spurs on Sunday afternoon, hoping for a victory that will keep them in the title hunt. The Blues fell seven points behind Arsenal after the Gunners won 4-0 at Leeds
on Saturday, and anything less than three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday will leave Pep Guardiola’s title hopes in jeopardy.
Although City have come back from worse deficits in the past, defeat in North London, coupled with Arsenal’s good form, will leave them with a difficult way back. And with the annual defeat at Anfield on the horizon, the Blues need to take three points from the Spuds today.
Spurs have being doing things that only Spurs can do. Their league form is ridiculously poor, having failed to win in five matches and only winning seven all season. Yet in the Champions League, they somehow finished fourth, losing just one match. It’s the kind of Jekyll and Hyde performances that leaves the Spurs hierarchy wondering whether or not to sack he manager or keep him in place in search of European glory.
Spurs new stadium is a place where City dread going, however, they have won the last two league matches there without conceding a goal. With a bit of luck, the Blues will make it three on the bounce today.
As usual, our team are here to give us their views and opinions on how the match will go. Here’s what we think this week.
Saul
Real difficult match vs a usually difficult rival. Spurs in league play is a small puppy while in UCL they have been light out. City should win, but we have seen how they fare vs Spurs in recent matches. Give me the narrowest of wins. 2-1.
Spurs 1-2 City
Will
Tottenham away is a bogey fixture, and Thomas Frank is a bogey manager for Pep’s City.
But this season, they’ve been terrible, and Frank is essentially a dead man walking, as good as his results in Europe have been.
I think City should win – unless they play like they did against Manchester United and Bodo Glimt.
Tottenham 0-3 Manchester City
Thomas
What to make of this one. The Spuds are an enigma. 14th in the Prem, yet they finished 4th in the UCL League Phase. City, too, have had some shockers of late. The Bodo/Glimt loss looks a little better with them making it through to the knockouts, but yikes. With Semenyo and Guehi in the squad I expect City’s best. A trip to Spurs has typically been a horror show for the Manc Blues, however. So… here’s a guess.
Spurs 1-2 City
Pete
Very difficult match. My head is saying it’ll be a draw, but my heart is going for a win and saying 1-0 City. I’m going to go with my head and go for a draw.
Spurs 2-2 City
How did we do against Galatasaray
I’ve never been so nervous for a Champions League match as I was on Wednesday. City’s match finished and it all hinged on Real Madrid’s result at Benfica. Of course, they had to have like half a day’s worth of injury time, just to leave us all on edge, but we made it.
Saul, Will and Thomas seem to have conspired for Wednesday’s result, all going for 3-1, while Pete went for a tentative 1-0. They all get extra points for the correct goal difference, which means Pete’s stay at the top of the table was brief.
Here’s the table:
