Vincent Kompany is not about to let one mistake define Manuel Neuer, even after the Bayern Munich captain gifted FC Augsburg an early goal in Saturday’s frustrating 2-2 draw.
Neuer’s afternoon got off to a disastrous start when his attempted clearance following the kickoff struck Robin Fellhauer, allowing the Augsburg midfielder to race through and score after just 8.4 seconds. The goal set a new Bundesliga record for the fastest strike in league history, giving Bayern an unwanted place in the record books.
However, Kompany was quick to defend his experienced goalkeeper after the match, emphasizing the importance of responding to adversity rather than dwelling on a single costly moment.
“Of course, we had wished for a better start. I played enough football to know that it happens, and you can’t change that. The important thing is how you react afterwards. Manu is experienced enough. He just has to carry on and show how good he is. He will do that, but we shouldn’t forget that we also missed many chances on the other side,” Kompany explained (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The Bayern Munich manager has a point. While Neuer’s error immediately put his team on the back foot, Bayern had ample opportunities to take control of the match and secure all three points.
For a team with Bayern Munich’s ambitions, a draw against FC Augsburg inevitably feels like two points dropped. Neuer’s mistake was an obvious talking point, but Kompany is right that the goalkeeper should not shoulder all the blame for a disappointing afternoon.
The response matters now. Neuer has earned enough credit throughout his extraordinary career to deserve the opportunity to move on, and Bayern Munich must make sure that one costly mistake does not overshadow the broader problems exposed by this result.
