NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman will extend her contract by 3 years, according to reporting by Sportico.
Berman first stepped into the role of Commissioner in March 2022 on a four-year contract, which
was set to expire at .
The decision to extend her contract was voted on by the league’s executive committee. According to Sportico, the decision was not unanimous among all club owners. Instead, over the summer, the full ownership group authorized the smaller 4-person executive group to negotiate and finalize the details of Berman’s contract.
“We’re proud to have Jessica Berman’s continued leadership as commissioner of the National Women’s Soccer League,” Carolyn Tisch Blodgett, owner of Gotham FC and chair of the executive committee, said in a statement to Sportico. “Under her guidance, the NWSL has reached new heights in attendance, revenue, and global visibility. This extension ensures we can continue building on that momentum.”
Berman first became commissioner while the league was dealing with the wake of the sexual abuse scandal.
During her time as Commissioner, she has overseen multiple rounds of NWSL expansion and a significant new league media deal worth $240 million, representing dramatic growth. The media deal was again expanded in September 2025. Under her leadership, the valuation of clubs have grown by an estimated 50x.
However, Berman has also faced criticism for how she has handled difficult situations. In one situation, Angel City FC defender Savy King collapsed on the field due to a heart issue and the game continued. In the other, a match between the Kansas City Current and Orlando Pride was delayed due to dangerous heat. Berman reportedly told the Current they could be fined for asking for a heat check.
Berman previously worked for the law firm Proskauer Rose, the NHL, and was the deputy commissioner and executive vice president of business affairs of the National Lacrosse League.
