The United States Men’s National Team have an incredible opportunity ahead of them. As co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, they look to inspire an entire nation by playing well in the tournament that is taking place mostly on home soil. It won’t be easy. The tournament is bigger, with 48 teams instead of 32 with a chance to lift the trophy at MetLife Stadium on July 19th.
That is a dream that the USMNT should have, however realistic one may think it is. For 26 players, the dream will be real on June
12th when they step out onto the field as the United States Men’s National Team, prepared to take on Paraguay and open up the 2026 World Cup at home.
The group stage has three teams that are solid and cannot be taken lightly
In Group D, the United States will take on Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye in the group stage:
USMNT World Cup Group D Matches
- USA vs. Paraguay – June 12th, 9:00pm ET (LA)
- USA vs. Australia – June 19th, 3:00pm ET (Seattle)
- Türkiye vs. USA – June 25th, 10:00pm ET (LA)
The group is one of the strongest from top to bottom, and the order of finish for this group can have several combinations. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has said that each group stage match has to be approached like they’re each a World Cup final, and that’s the mentality that the USMNT need to have.
They cannot take any opponent, no match should be taken for granted. Doing well in the group stage can set the team up for a path to the World Cup final on July 19th that’s achievable, and with the World Cup on home soil, it’s a chance to develop a wave of momentum that no other team, save for Mexico or Canada, can truly create during this tournament.
Christian Pulisic is the face, but Tyler Adams is the key
When casual fans think of the United States Men’s National Team, the first player they think of is Christian Pulisic. He’s been the face of the team for years, and is already fifth on the all-time goalscoring list for the team. How far the team goes will depend a lot on Pulisic rising to the occasion and performing like a world class star.
However, the ball knowers will tell you that Tyler Adams is the true key to the team’s success. He’s arguably the most important USMNT player in a long time. The team elevates their game when he’s in the lineup playing with passion and intensity. When he’s not on the field, the hole is enormous. The USMNT will not advance far if Adams is not on the field, but they also need to do what they can to surround him with guys that can cover for him when he does need a rest.
To inspire a nation, they have to elevate their game
This is different than the soccer environment that existed before the 1994 World Cup. Back then, there was no Major League Soccer, and the stars of the 1994 USMNT had to create American soccer’s future on the field. The 2026 USMNT has an opportunity to give that legacy legitimacy. The USMNT have to figure out how to elevate their game to the elite level that the best teams in the world do on a consistent basis, and each player has to find that ability to play bigger than themselves to match the moment.
This is the time to show that they not only can put up a good fight against the elite teams in the world, but they can also beat them and can go on a run that will inspire every American to dream that lifting the World Cup trophy is an achievable thing. If they fall short, there will be questions about whether our soccer structure truly will yield success on the men’s side. But if they can make a run and beat some contenders along the way, it can change the trajectory of soccer in this country.
