The Cleveland Browns came out of Thursday’s joint practice with the Buffalo Bills, with HC Todd Monken saying they looked like they belonged. The Browns left Saturday’s second preseason game, also with the Bills, looking like a team who didn’t belong on the field, and with veteran QB Deshaun Watson looking like he might be done playing football, especially because of his feelings for Cleveland fans.
We even reviewed what releasing Watson would look like on the salary cap.
With everyone assuming that
Watson’s performance on the field and in the press conference closed the door on him and would lead to Shedeur Sanders getting the starting job, Monken wasn’t ready to name the starter on Sunday but promised an answer on Monday.
According to reports, starting with Jordan Schultz and followed up by Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter, that answer is to give the keys to Watson despite everything that happened on Saturday:
With the Browns starting on the road the first two weeks, Watson will not have to hear anything from the home crowd. Given the team’s history and what has been a close competition, Sanders could be named the starter at any time if Watson’s on-field performance is poor.
