Alex Highsmith has been bugged by a groin injury each of the past two seasons.
It kept him out of three games in 2024 and limited his availability in training camp.
It won’t do the same to begin the regular season. Mike Tomlin confirmed to the media on Monday that Highsmith was nearly a full participant in practice on the South Side.
Asked if he will be good to go against the New York Jets, Highsmith was adamant.
“Absolutely,” the pass rusher said after practice.
Highsmith tweaked his groin on Aug. 3
and didn’t play in any of the Steelers’ three preseason games. He never missed a game prior to last year, sitting out six with two separate injuries, including the groin.
Highsmith recorded 45 tackles, six sacks, nine tackles for loss, and one forced fumble in 11 games. He also sacked Lamar Jackson once in the Steelers’ lone playoff game.
“I’ve been feeling great,” Highsmith said. “I’ve been doing a lot of rehab over the past few weeks, just making myself right. They are working me back in slowly.”
Highsmith will be chasing after his former teammate, Justin Fields, at MetLife Stadium. He owns 35.5 sacks in five seasons and is a part of the highest-paid defense in the league for the fourth consecutive year.
The Steelers and Jets will begin the 2025 season next Sunday (Sept. 7) at 1 p.m. EST.
