Newcastle United’s search for midfield reinforcements appears far from over following the senior departures at the club, with the Magpies continuing to assess experienced Premier League options ahead of Matthias Jaissle’s first season in charge.
The Magpies have already been linked with several midfielders this summer as they prepare for an entirely post-Eddie Howe era in which the squad is clearly skewing younger than ever.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle has now turned its attention to United
States international and Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams after Manchester United decided to pass on pursuing the midfielder.
“Newcastle United are plotting a move to sign Bournemouth star Tyler Adams as they put plans in place to bolster their midfield options,” Brown wrote. “The 27-year-old enjoyed an impressive season with Bournemouth last time out as he helped them qualify for the Europa League, before impressing at the World Cup with the USA.”
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told the outlet the Red Devils are focusing on different midfield profiles, potentially leaving Newcastle with a clearer path to the 27-year-old. Brown, meanwhile, also believes Adams is not the type of midfielder Manchester United is prioritizing this summer.
“Tyler Adams is a good player and he’s done a very good job for Bournemouth,” Brown told Football Insider. “But I would be extremely surprised if he was somebody Man United made a move for this summer, and I don’t think it’s something they’re considering at the moment. They want a top-class replacement for Casemiro, and despite being an aggressive midfielder, I don’t think Adams ticks many of their boxes.”
The former scout suggested Newcastle’s needs are different following the changes in its midfield.
“However, if there is a possibility that he could leave Bournemouth this summer, one club who I do believe are watching him is Newcastle,” Brown said. “They want to sign a new midfielder because they’re losing key players in that position, and Adams is somebody whose performances will have put him on their radar.”
Brown also pointed to Adams’ performances over the last year while acknowledging Bournemouth may not be an easy club to negotiate with.
“He’s done well in the Premier League for Bournemouth, and at the World Cup as well with the USA, so I’m sure they will have been keeping an eye on him,” he added. “A lot might depend on whether or not he is willing to leave Bournemouth, because they had a very good season and now they’re in Europe, but Newcastle will feel they can convince him.”
Adams appeared in 39 games across club and international competitions last season, scoring two goals and assisting on two more (all in Premier League action) while playing 342 minutes spread over four games at the World Cup for the USMNT.
