Despite leaving his head coaching post at UMBC under less-than-favorable circumstances, Ryan Moran has found his footing. The former Maryland men’s lacrosse offensive coordinator has reportedly been re-hired by head coach John Tillman to take up his old post for the 2027 season.
Moran now returns to College Park to fill in the vacancy left by Mike Phipps, who left the program in June after three years of tenure to prioritize his family. However, Moran’s return does not come without controversy.
Following a bullying scandal at UMBC, the school’s athletic department reportedly asked Moran to resign. When he refused, he was subsequently fired from his role, a move that sparked plenty of outrage in diehard online lacrosse communities across the state of Maryland.
Moran looks to improve an offense that struggled to find its footing and averages 10.8 goals per game while the team failed to secure a spot in the NCAA tournament.
