The cornerback market has been reset in the NFL once more. Trent McDuffie, who recently was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Rams, signed a new four-year contract extension on Sunday at a total value of $124 million.
Averaging $31 million per year and including $100 million in guarantees, McDuffie now sits atop the rankings at his position in both categories. How long he will remain in the top spot will be seen, however, because there is a clear candidate to surpass him in all
of those categories in the near future: New England Patriots standout Christian Gonzalez.
Coming off his third season in the NFL, Gonzalez is now eligible to sign an extension. The Patriots have expressed interest in working with the 23-year-old beyond the duration of his current rookie contract.
“Obviously, we love Christian and we’ll talk about those things when the time is appropriate. But Christian took a big step forward this year,” Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said about Gonzalez at the NFL Scouting Combine. “He took a big step forward with his play style and we’re excited about having him be a part of our team for the long term.”
Gonzalez joined the Patriots as the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, signing a standard four-year deal that also includes a fifth-year option. He quickly developed into one of the best cornerbacks in football, and earned second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
While an extension seems like the best-case outcome for both parties, that fifth-year option presents a fallback option for 2027. Its value was recently announced as a fully-guaranteed $18.119 million. The Patriots have until May 1 to exercise it, but also could extend Gonzalez at any point in time.
Once they do, he is expected to become the latest CB to reset the market.
