After struggling through two of the worst months of football in recent memory in October and November, the first half of December has brought with it glimmers of hope with three wins and two draws for
Liverpool over their last five games.
Not every moment has delivered unbridled positivity, with the first three games—a win against West Ham and draws with Sunderland and Leeds—a distinctly mixed bag, but wins over Inter Milan and Brighton in their last two have been commendable.
“Five games unbeaten and out of the five we have three clean sheets so that’s something to build on,” manager Arne Slot reflected. “These players played four games in 10 days, which was hard for them, and with maybe one day extra rest we played Brighton.
“That they could do this one more time after such a tough period cost them a lot of energy and that you could see—because not all of them could finish the 90 minutes. But the mentality of the team was good enough that we were able to win it.”
The fixture pileup and a slowly growing injury list got added to against Brighton, with Joe Gomez ruled out for at least the next game and Dominik Szoboszlai said to be a doubt by Slot despite being able to finish the match after suffering an ankle injury.
Still, after how badly things went in the previous months, the mood is far more positive than not following their last five matches and now the Reds get a rare full week off before travelling south to London to take on Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
