On Thursday, UConn signee Olivia Vukosa was named Gatorade Girls’ National Basketball Player of the Year. Diana Taurasi surprised her with the hardware at Christ The King High School in New York.
Vukosa is the 12th Husky to win the award, joining Paige Bueckers (2020), Azzi Fudd (2019),
Christyn Williams (2018), Megan Walker (2017), Katie Lou Samuelson (2015), Breanna Stewart (2012), Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (2011), Maya Moore (2007), Tina Charles (2006), Ann Strother (2002) and Tamika Williams (1998).
As a senior, Vukosa averaged 17.8 points, 18.1 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.4 blocks while leading Christ The King to the Catholic High School Athletic Association state championship game. She’s also earned McDonald’s All-American and Naismith Second Team All-American honors.
A two-time New York State Gatorade Player of the Year, the 6-5 Vukosa is rated as the No. 3 recruit in the class of 2026 by ESPN. She’ll join the Huskies next fall along with Jovana Popovic, a guard out of Serbia.
