Note: Today is nomination day! Head to the comment section to nominate the next batch of players for the CPL.
I hope everyone had a swell first week of the new year. We’re only a little over a month away
from the start of Spring Training, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do on the 2026 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List, which will see us rank the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization.
Winning Monday’s election is right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte, who has been voted as the No. 25 prospect in the system in his inaugural CPL.
Marte, who turned 22 in August, is a tall pitcher, listed at 6’5, and he’s quite new to the organization. He’s only pitched in five games with Giants affiliates, after coming over at the deadline in the Mike Yastrzemski trade.
The right-hander was a 2022 international signing with the Kansas City Royals out of the Dominican Republic, and spent the entirety of the 2025 season in Low-A, first with the Columbia Fireflies (where he made 19 starts), and then with the San Jose Giants (where three of his five appearances were starts). Across the two organizations he posted a 2.91 ERA and a 3.19 FIP, with 8.47 strikeouts per nine innings and 2.56 walks. He nearly tripled his career high by pitching 102 innings, which would have ranked 12th in the Giants organization (and second among pitchers who spent time in San Jose).
He’s a strong fastball/slider pitcher (though not exclusively a fastball/slider pitcher), and, funnily enough, has the same name as a Giants reliever from 2022 (though that Yunior Marte spells his surname “Marté”). Marte currently lives in the mid-90s and can touch the mid-high 90s, and his ability to build on that electricity may determine if he has an MLB future … and if that future is as a starter, or as a reliever.
One thing’s for sure: it was weird seeing Yaz in a different jersey, but the Giants sure got something interesting in return. It will be fun seeing Marte — who surely will open the year in High-A Eugene’s rotation — getting a full season in the system.
Now let’s add to the list, and don’t forget that today is nomination day! Nominating the next batch of prospects to vote on — and voting for the No. 26 prospect — will both take place in the comment section.
