In a move that undoes their offseason catching acquisition, the Mets are sending Ben Rortvedt back to the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to Jon Heyman.
The Mets previously claimed Rortvedt off waivers from the Dodgers in February, and after getting a look at him in Spring Training, sent him to Triple-A Syracuse, where he has batted .190/.279/.549. However, he performed decently for the Dodgers in the majors during the postseason last year while Will Smith was injured. He was designated for assignment
in the offseason, but the Dodgers again need catching depth while Smith is struggling with a neck injury.
The Mets will acquire righty reliever Chayce McDermott, who has been up and down for the Dodgers this season, and was designated for assignment on July 31. McDermott was drafted in 2021 out of Ball State University by the Houston Astros and made his major league debut in 2024. He is boasting a 7.71 ERA in only 2.1 innings pitched in the majors this year,. In Triple-A, his ERA is 4.55 and his WHIP is 1.55, and his K/9 is 14.78 in 31.2 innings pitched and only one start.
