Serge Gnabry is currently enjoying an excellent start to the 2025/26 season for both Bayern Munich and Germany. From the opening nine matches for club and country so far, he has tallied four goals and three assists. For Bayern, the only two matches that he didn’t have a direct goal contribution in were the 3-1 Champions League win over Chelsea and the 3-2 first round DFB-Pokal win over Wehen Wiesbaden. With the evidence of the last few seasons of his career at Bayern on display, it’s easy to see
that he’s currently on pace to have the season of his life with the German Rekordmeister, but whether or not he can maintain a level of consistency is the burning question that looms large – it’s something he’s struggled with, even in the 219/20 Sextuple season where he scored key goals in decisive phases in all competitions.
His contract with Bayern expires this coming summer, and it is still unclear that this point whether or not the club will offer him a contract extension, which would likely have to take place sooner rather than later. If he’s still not signed an extension by January, he could technically sign a pr-contract to join a different club come July 1st as a free agent, which would be the worst case scenario for Bayern.
In a recent chat with Sky Sport, Bayern’s attacker said that he’s not really thinking about his contract situation at the moment even though his future does hang in the balance. For now, he stressed, he’s just focused on playing his football and doing his talking on the pitch. “I’m not thinking about that at all right now. I’m very relaxed. I’m just happy that things are going so well, that we’re playing so well. We’ll see about everything else when the time comes,” Bayern’s number 7 explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
For what it’s worth, Gnabry has really stepped up in Jamal Musiala’s absence thus far and there will also be a spot to fill when Nicolas Jackson goes away in the winter with the Senegal national team for the African Cup of Nations, but will he be able to make the most of his minutes when those two players are fit and available? There’s a lot of football left to be played between now and the end of May, and the tide can turn drastically in one direction or another in terms of what Bayern would be willing to offer Gnabry to stay for at least another season or beyond.
The front office and supervisory board have, more than once, been convinced by some of Gnabry’s key goals and performances towards the end of different seasons to not try to sell him in the subsequent summer transfer windows, but it’s difficult to say if that will be the case once again. For now, the ball is mostly in Gnabry’s court and it’s up to him to consistently deliver.
