The big question for the 52nd Milwaukee Cup was whether or not Marquette would be able to hold the Cup for a fifth straight year. The Golden Eagles set a series record for possession of the crosstown traveling trophy with Milwaukee last year, and so, obviously, they could reset that record once again here. The upside for the Golden Eagles is that they could keep it with a draw, while the Panthers had to win the game in order to take the trophy back.
The matter ended up settled in the 17th minute when
Marquette got off on a break, and Joey Buchanan threaded a pass forward to Tomiwa Adewumi, who was joined in the attack by Mads Konrad Horgoien. Luckily, as the Milwaukee defenders — including keeper Carson Pridie! — swarmed the freshman with eight goals already this season, Buchanan stayed heads up and followed the play in the box. That allowed Adewumi to poke it over to Buchanan, and with Pridie waaaaay out of the net, all the other Milwaukee defenders could do was watch the ball roll into the net.
That one goal ended up as all Marquette would need to maintain possession of the Milwaukee Cup for a new program record fifth straight year! The Golden Eagles controlled play across the span of 90 minutes, ultimately outshooting Milwaukee 15-9, and they peppered Pridie with shots in the second half. He had to make five saves on Marquette’s seven shots after the break, so this one absolutely could have gotten out of control if MU was a little bit luckier. All those saved shots helped MU keeper Cameron Simpson take it easy after making three stops to keep Milwaukee scoreless in the first half. He didn’t need to make an official stop in the second half to finish off the clean sheet.
Up Next: That was Marquette’s last Division 1 non-conference match of the season, so it’s back to Big East play for the next two contests. First up this coming Saturday is Creighton in the Valley, with first kick set for 6pm Central time on ESPN+. The Bluejays are 7-0-2 this season after a 3-0 win over Providence in their Big East opener back on Friday, and they’re currently scoreless at halftime with Denver as I type this.
