Today’s roster move: Here
Monday notes:
- FIVE IS NOT FINE: The five runs scored by the Nationals in the ninth inning yesterday were just the fourth five-run inning against the Cubs all season. It was the first in 54 games, since July 6 vs. the Cardinals. The others were April 22 vs. the Dodgers and June 22 vs. the Mariners. The Cubs won those two games and lost the third. All four were at home. They have surrendered six runs in an inning twice and eight, nine and 10 runs once each. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- HAPP-ENINGS: Ian Happ, last 19 games since Aug. 19: .318/.438/.591 (21-for-66) with six doubles, four home runs, 11 RBI, 14 walks and 15 runs scored.
- HERE’S SOME RELIEF: Caleb Thielbar, last 10 appearances since Aug. 4: 1.00 ERA, 0.600 WHIP, no walks and 11 strikeouts in nine innings.
- THIS DAY IN CUBS HISTORY: Rick Sutcliffe threw a four-hit shutout, striking out 12, as the Cubs defeated the Mets 6-0 at Shea Stadium and increased their NL East lead to seven games. It happened 41 years ago today, Saturday, Sept. 8, 1984.
Cubs lineup:
Braves lineup:
Shōta Imanaga, LHP vs. Bryce Elder, RHP

Shōta Imanaga allowed three runs (including two home runs) in six innings against the Braves last Tuesday at Wrigley Field. The Cubs won the game 4-3.
Home runs have always been the roughest part of Imanaga’s game. He’s allowed 23 in 123 innings this year, a higher rate than last year —
and even that rate (27 in 173.1 innings) was pretty high.
Keep the ball in the ballpark tonight and things should go well.
Bryce Elder held the Cubs to four hits and one unearned run last Wednesday at Wrigley Field. Elder has had a rough season, but his last three starts (including that one) have been pretty good.
Hopefully, Cubs hitters, having seen Elder just a few days ago, will have figured out how to hit him tonight.
