Newcastle United begins the 2026-27 Premier League campaign on Sunday with Liverpool visiting St James’ Park for Matthias Jaissle’s first competitive game in charge of the Magpies.
After a summer featuring major changes on the touchline and across the squad, the preseason is finally over, and Newcastle enters the new EPL campaign looking to improve on last season’s disappointing 12th-place finish.
Jaissle’s side arrives at the opener following three preseason games without a victory, closing its preparations
with defeats against Everton and Bayer Leverkusen before drawing with Strasbourg last Sunday. The Magpies will be without Joelinton and Tino Livramento, while several summer arrivals could make their Premier League debuts.
Liverpool, meanwhile, begins a new era of its own under manager Andoni Iraola after wrapping up preseason with a 2-0 victory over Como.
The two clubs produced a memorable five-goal game at St James’ Park last season, with Liverpool leaving Tyneside with a 3-2 victory, so let’s hope for another packed match today, only with the result in reverse!
