Happy Tuesday, Camden Chatters!
The losing streak is over. The Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox, 4-1 in a game that was way too close for most of it. Kyle Bradish and struck out nine in five innings, but struggled with control. He walked four, although two of them were squeeze jobs by the umpire. A sixth-inning Earl Weaver Special from Colton Cowser put the Orioles ahead, which is where they stayed. To get the full details, check out Mark Brown’s recap.
It wasn’t exactly a confidence-inspiring
win. The Orioles had just two hits through the first five innings, but they did walk four times. But there were a few offensive performances worth noting. Jackson Holliday had two hits and a walk. Coby Mayo didn’t homer for the third straight day, but he walked twice and was hit by a pitch (a painful way to help the OBP). Samuel Basallo singled, walked, and scored two runs. I’ll take what I can get at this point.
You may have missed the transactions that took place before yesterday’s game. Yaramil Hiraldo and Chayce McDermott were called back up to the bullpen. They replace Carson Ragsdale, who was DFA’d, and Albert Suárez, who was placed on the IL. Neither appeared in the game yesterday.
The Orioles also claimed lefty reliever José Castillo off waivers from the Mariners. As of last night, he hadn’t joined the team. Castillo has made a lot of moves this season. He started the year in Triple-A, then was called up by the Diamondbacks. The Mets acquired him from the Diamondbacks, and he spent time with both the Mets and their Triple-A affiliate, Syracuse. The Mets lost him on waivers to the Mariners in early September, and now the Orioles have grabbed him. He is probably better than several current Orioles relievers.
Dean Kremer returns tonight after missing a start with forearm soreness. I admit, I am still worried about his future. But a solid start tonight and another five days after that will go a long way to make me feel better. I imagine it would make Kremer feel better as well.
Also returning tonight is Jordan Westburg. He’ll serve as DH tonight before returning to the field. It’s getting so late in the season that these returns don’t seem to matter much, but it’ll be nice to have Westburg back and playing every day. Emmanuel Rivera might not be so eager to see his return.

Orioles place Suárez on injured list with right elbow discomfort – Baltimore Baseball
What a terrible turn of events for Albert Suárez. He missed most of the season with an injury, finally came back, looked good, and now this. Suárez is 35 years old.

Birthdays and History
Is today your birthday? Happy birthday! You have four Orioles birthday buddies. Today is Mickey Tettleton’s 65th birthday. Tettleton played three years for the Orioles from 1988-90. In 1989, Tettleton was a huge part of the Why Not team, with a 150 OPS+. He was named to the All-Star team and earned the Silver Slugger. He was traded to the Detroit Tigers before the 1991 season for Jeff Robinson. As a trade it was terrible, but it opened the door for Chris Hoiles to become the Orioles’ catcher.
Also born on this day are former Orioles Paul Shuey (55), Mark Parent (64), and Hall of Famer Tim Raines (66).
On this day in 1985, the Orioles defeated the Tigers, 14-7. They had two five-run innings and hit six home runs. Cal Ripken went deep twice. Rick Dempsey, John Shelby, Eddie Murray, and Fred Lynn also homered.
In 2012, the Orioles clinched their first winning season since 1997 with a 9-5 victory over the Athletics. Matt Wieters homered twice, Brian Matusz got the win in relief, and Jim Johnson got the final out to earn his 43rd save.
In 2014, the Orioles clinched the A.L. East with an 8-2 win against the Blue Jays. I was at the game and it was an incredible celebration. Ubaldo Jiménez pitched five innings to get the win. Steve Pearce hit a three-run homer. The players and fans celebrated together long after the game ended. Adam Jones pied anyone he could get his hands on. What a night.
