Report: Bayern Munich gave 2027 release clause to Dayot Upamecano, might have bid against itself

According to a report from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich center-back Dayot Upamecano might not have had as many serious suitors as previous reports indicated.

Just days before Upamecano

agreed to signed a new deal (the official signing and announcement is pending), the Frenchman was linked to Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Inter Milan, but that reporting might have been ambitious. Per Romano, Real Madrid did not even make a bid:

X account @iMiaSanMia summarized Romano’s YouTube video and added more context to Romano’s X post where he stated that only Paris Saint-Germain and an unnamed English club showed “concrete interest” in Upamecano:

Two clubs showed concrete interest in Dayot Upamecano: PSG and one English club. Real Madrid explored the possibility but there were no concrete proposals. But in the end Upamecano decided to stay at FC Bayern. The release clause included in the new contract will be valid from summer 2027.

Throughout the process, there was a mountain of reporting — some good, some bad. If true, this paints a different picture of what Upamecano was really looking at, which might have been no formal bids and just two clubs outside of Bayern Munich willing to discuss his big contract demands.

However, the biggest news from Romano is about the release clause, which he is saying will be active in 2027. Romano did not include the fee attached to it, but previous rumors indicated it would be €60 million to €65 million.

As a reminder, there has been no official conformation of the release clause or its fee, but Bayern Munich does not typically divulge contractual details.
