Ahead of a hotly anticipated Champions League quarterfinals matchup between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, both teams appeared to stumble out the gates in their domestic leagues this weekend.
While Bayern summoned the energy to answer SC Freiburg’s stunning two-goal opening salvo — eventually winning at the death courtesy of an Alphonso Davies cross for Lennart Karl — Real Madrid went down to 2-1 to Mallorca, currently coached by former Bayern II boss Martín Demichelis.
If Real poses greater danger
now as a wounded giant, Bayern is happy to be in its own position, having dusted off once again an impressive set of comeback credentials. Even with a lead, don’t sleep on the Bavarians.
“The feeling couldn’t be any more positive ahead of the trip to Madrid,” Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said after the match in comments captured by FCBayern.com. “We knew it would be very, very difficult at Freiburg. They deserved to lead by two goals, but the way our team played then and wanted to win — that’s true spirit, so it was a very nice win today. You could feel in the stands we didn’t want to lose.”
