Lukas Van Ness had an inauspicious start to his NFL career. Through two seasons, he’d produced just seven sacks and 16 quarterback hits. He was solid against the run, but you don’t pick an edge rusher 13th overall because he’s stout in the ground game.
Year three was promising, but then the injuries came. Nagging issues limited Van Ness to just nine games in 2025, and for more than a few of those nine, he clearly wasn’t quite himself.
And then the Packers picked up his fifth-year option this past offseason.
I was a fan of the move, but I can understand anybody who was skeptical. Injuries and a lack of production are a recipe for some negativity, and Van Ness had plenty of both of those things.
But through two weeks, Van Ness has paid off every bit of faith the Packers have had in him. Two weeks does not a season make (and the Packers are thanking the ghost of Lombardi for that), but the start for Van Ness is about as promising as things could be. Hopefully this turns into a season-long trend. The Van Ness ascension may just have begun.
