The Virginia Tech Hokies head into Saturday’s regular-season finale with a record of 19-11, including an 8-9 mark in ACC play. The Hokies sit squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble ahead of Saturday’s massive game in Charlottesville against No. 13 Virginia. In Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology, Virginia Tech is among the first four out, specifically listed as the third team out.
If Tech wins on Saturday, there’s a good chance they move off the bubble, because that would be two wins over Virginia and
a big road win at Clemson. If the Hokies lose, that would mean they’d need an extended run in the ACC Tournament, and that’s no guarantee. Have you seen how good Duke is this year?
If the Hokies miss the NCAA Tournament, what would that mean for head coach Mike Young? Nothing, according to athletic director Whit Babcock.
“He’s fine,” Babcock said via Mark Berman of The Roanoke Times. “I believe in him.”
Young has one year remaining on his contract, which runs through next season. The 62-year-old Radford native has a record of 123-96 (56%) with a 60-69 record in ACC play. If the Hokies fail to make the NCAA Tournament, it would be the fourth consecutive year they’ve missed. Young led the Hokies to the school’s first ACC championship four years ago.
You could make the case that Virginia Tech hasn’t lived up to increased expectations. However, that requires context, as Virginia Tech was without Tobi Lawal for several games and Tyler Johnson for almost all of ACC play. Additionally, the Hokies have been near the bottom of the ACC in resources in recent years. While that effort improved in 2025-26, Virginia Tech is still well behind other ACC schools, like Duke, North Carolina, Virginia and others.
Considering the money allocated to the football program this offseason, it will be interesting if Virginia Tech continues to pour more resources into the men’s and women’s basketball programs, too.
