Cody Rhodes punted Randy Orton in the head at Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He didn’t even have to, to hear him tell it. He was going to win their Last Man Standing match anyway. He straight up stopped the referee from counting, and went ahead with doing what he promised he would.
Why?
So people will stop asking him, it sounds like.
The bigger point, per the man himself on the Crown Jewel post-show, is that he’s ready to move on to what’s next and he wants that to be something actually fun again.
He’s tired of being so serious all the time:
“It is a huge win, and it’s a win that did not require me punting Randy Orton. I had Randy Orton beat and I still punted Randy Orton. So what does that say? What does that say? I don’t want to hear ‘will he/won’t he’ ever again. Demon’s been exorcized, for sure. And this entire thing, no matter where Randy and I have gotten to Randy still at one point was my hero, my mentor… that never goes away.
This entire thing has hijacked my joy for what we do. It really has. So the melancholy and the deepness of all this? Not for me. Not for me. I’d love something light, something fun, even if it’s fun competition. I mean, Rey Mysterio is over there on Stephanie’s podcast talking about a Team Mexico vs. Team USA. Sounds great! He’s gonna lead Team Mexico, I’d love to Team USA, lead them along, find a team of my own. That sounds like something I would like to do. Rey Mysterio, if you’re listening to me let’s make that happen at Survivor Series. Let’s do that. You’re on.”
Mysterio indeed announced that we’ll be getting a traditional elimination match at Survivor Series in Houston on Nov. 28 but with a patriotic bent. They’ve only got a few weeks to work out who is going to be in that match, while also building to two separate War Games matches. Rhodes as captain of Team USA makes sense — not even considering his turn as Guile in the recent Street Fighter live action remake — now that he’s done with Orton.
Assuming, of course, that he is done with Orton.
Like the idea?
