Newcastle United will host Manchester City in the FA Cup fifth round, setting up a rematch of their recent Carabao Cup semi-final meeting.
The draw, conducted live ahead of Brentford’s fourth-round tie with Macclesfield on Monday, paired Newcastle with Pep Guardiola’s side in what stands as one of the headliners of the fifth round.
The game will be played at St. James’ Park over the weekend
of March 7-8, just days after Newcastle face Manchester United in the Premier League on March 4, and only a few weeks removed from the Magpies’ elimination from the EFL Cup at the hands of the Cityzens.
Newcastle reached the last 16 of the FA Cup with back-to-back wins over Premier League opposition, first defeating Bournemouth on penalties after a 3-3 draw in the third round, and then earning a massive 3-1 comeback victory at Aston Villa.
Manchester City eliminated Newcastle from the Carabao Cup semi-finals in early February with an aggregate result of 5-1. City won the second leg 3-1 after building a two-goal advantage in the first meeting, making it simply impossible for the Geordies to even get close to advancing.
More damagingly, that result ended Newcastle’s defense of the trophy they won last season to secure their first major domestic title in 70 years.
The FA Cup draw also produced ties between Chelsea and Wrexham, Arsenal visiting Mansfield Town, and Wolverhampton Wanderers hosting Liverpool in another all-Premier League clash.
Fulham face Southampton, while Sunderland will play Port Vale or Bristol City. West Ham await the winner of Macclesfield against Brentford.
