San Diego Wave announced on Thursday the signing of 18-year-old San Diego native Melanie Barcenas to a contract extension through the 2028 NWSL season.
“I’m really proud to represent my city and this club that has believed in me from the beginning” said Barcenas in a statement. “This season has been an important one for me, helping me grow and gain confidence as a player, and I’m excited to keep pushing myself, contributing to this team and doing everything I can to help bring more success and championships
to San Diego.”
The attacking star has had a breakout year in 2026 living up to the hype capitalizing on her creative dribbling to create difficult goal-scoring opportunities. Barcenas has scored six goals in 2026 leading all teenagers in the NWSL across 23 appearances and 1088 minutes.
“Melanie [Barcenas] has shown tremendous growth both on and off the field this year, establishing herself as one of the league’s most dynamic young attacking players,” said Camille Ashton, San Diego Wave FC General Manager and Sporting Director in a statement. “Her confidence, creativity, and ability to impact games have been evident, and we’re excited to see her continue to develop and play an important role in the future of this club.”
Barcenas has also made multiple appearances with the United States Youth National Team at the U-14, U-15, U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-20 levels. She along with Kimmi Ascanio missed the U-20 Women’s World Cup to stay with the Wave who are pushing for a home playoff match with six matches to play.
Despite her age, the 18-year-old star is the second-longest tenured player on the Wave joining in 2023 when she signed a professional contract at just 15 years old. Barcenas was growing in 2025, making 17 appearances, but had her season derailed by injury. She signed a one-year contract in December through the 2027 season, and has been great on the attacking front all season.
The Wave play their next match on Friday, September 18, against the Kansas City Current for their second-to-last regular season home game at Snapdragon Stadium in 2026.
