Technically, the 2025 MLB season is still going on, though we all hope it ends tonight. But it sure feels like the offseason around these parts, as we’re starting to find some rhythm with our time-honored
tradition of ranking the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization through the Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List. The first chapters have gotten people really talking about prospects, which is a testament to how much more exciting the farm is right now than in recent years.
The second chapter of the 2026 CPL didn’t bring any surprises, as the favorite led the whole way. And with that, shortstop Josuar González has been voted as the No. 2 prospect in the system, which is a rise of three spots from his No. 5 debut last year.
González impressed in every way last year. The switch-hitter, who was viewed by many as the best international free agent on the market last year (not including Rōki Sasaki), came to the Giants with a whole lot of hype, and now he’ll come to the states with even more hype. González, who turned 18 two weeks ago, spent the entire year in the Dominican Summer League, where he hit .288/.404/.455 for an .859 OPS and a 129 wRC+, while hitting four home runs in 228 plate appearances. In just 52 games, the hyper-athletic young man from the Dominican Republic stole 33 bases while getting thrown out just five times. He also posted a higher walk rate (16.2%) than strikeout rate (15.8%).
The numbers are fantastic, but the scouting reports are even shinier. González wowed scouts with his bat speed, batted ball data, and control of the zone, as well as with his defensive chops at shortstop. At this stage in his career, he has every tool in his bag, and if he has a strong showing next year in the Arizona Complex League, the hype surrounding the switch-hitter is only going to grow. It wouldn’t be at all shocking if he’s viewed as one of the top prospects in all of baseball this time next year, and with Bryce Eldridge sure to graduate in 2026, González is the favorite to earn the title of top Giants prospect when we begin this exercise next season.
But that’s a topic for another day. For now, let’s just add to the list!
