To the Victor goes the spoils … and that includes a 13-minute infomercial on CBS.
In the first 60 Minutes profile of a Spur since David Robinson got the prime-time treatment in 1992
, millions of viewers got up close and personal with Victor Wembanyama Sunday night. Correspondent Jon Wertheim introduced the glowing feature by saying, “While (Wembanyama) may be best known for his height and length, it’s nothing compared to his depth.”Lauding Wemby’s “holy matrimony of size and skill,” Wertheim highlighted
the remarkable on-court success of the franchise and its French centerpiece. But much of the profile focused on the characteristics that help Wembanyama transcend sports and become a human interest story for 60 Minutes’ mainstream audience.
The feature focused on Wemby’s intentionality when it comes to training and taking care of his body and mind. That included, of course, his summer in China with Buddhist monks, his passion for chess, and his health-conscious affinity for walking around barefoot.
At one point, Wertheim said, “You appreciate that, never mind athletes, not all people have your level of curiosity,” to which Wemby responded, “Yeah. It’s the defining trait of mine.”
The segment featured plenty of the deep-thinking eloquence we’ve grown accustomed to, along with the supreme confidence we’re familiar with as well. During the interview, Wemby identified his 2025 battle with a blood clot as the trigger for taking off the filter. As we know, he’ll shoot straight on everything from his MVP worthiness to the political climate both here and in his home country.
He said, “Life is so short, I don’t even wanna waste it being somebody else, you know?”
These 13 minutes with Wemby certainly aren’t a waste for Spurs fans. You can click hereto check out the full transcript and interview or watch below.
