At long last, the All-Star Game is returning to the Bay Area. On Friday morning, it was announced that the San Francisco Giants and their gorgeous waterfront ballpark will host the 2028 MLB All-Star Game, and all the midsummer festivities.
It’s the fourth time that the Giants have hosted the All-Star Game since moving to the Bay Area, and the second time since the construction of Oracle Park. The Giants last
hosted the event in 2007, when Ichiro Suzuki famously hit the first inside-the-park home run in All-Star history. Could we see similar shenanigans 21 years later?
Back in 2007, the Giants had just one All-Star: Barry Bonds, who made his 14th All-Star appearance in his final MLB season. It’ll be interesting to see who from the organization makes the team in 2028. It will also be interesting to see what happens with the home run derby. In 2007, the three left-handed hitters — Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, and Justin Morneau — struggled mightily, and not a single home run was hit into the water. Bryce Eldridge has already expressed a desire to compete in the home run derby … can his star shine brightly enough over the net few years to earn him a spot? And if not, will Rafael Devers compete?
Those are questions for another day. For now, we celebrate: the All-Star Game, in all her glory, is returning to the Bay.
