There’s a trend with the Denver Broncos offense.
This dates back to last season, and while successful, eventually the trend will turn. In the Broncos’ first win of the season, we saw this play out for the first time. Of course, that’s Bo Nix and the Denver offense finally clicking in the second half.
As long as the Broncos keep winning, whatever works. But it would be nice to see the offense getting going a little sooner. Take over whatever Denver does in the second half/fourth quarter to the first
quarter and first half.
When asked earlier this week what has allowed the offense to be successful in the fourth quarter, and if there’s anything that they can translate to earlier in the game, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said:
“That’s a great question. The last part of it, in other words, we talk about finishing. One of the things, especially at home, is … We talked about it at the start of the season, playing better early. I think the focus is more on the front end. I think if you’re playing with a lead, obviously, you have that balance. If you’re playing within a touchdown, you still have to have that balance. Last week was a good example, really. It becomes difficult if it’s one-dimensional in this league.”
The key is really to execute better in the first half. That sounds simple, but that was the case against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Earlier execution by the Broncos offense will lead to consistency.
“I think two plays in that first half, and it looks like we scored 14 points and it’s completely different, we’re not really talking about a slow start or anything,” Nix said to the media earlier this week. “We had two really good drives that we just didn’t score points on. I think that in the second half, that translated to touchdowns, and we got a good lead.
“So we just have to focus on those things to get the ball in the end zone. Then I think that is really what we could look like as a team. If we score points there, we’re in the 30s (points scored), and it’s a really good outing for us against a really good team. So we just have to find ways to finish the drive, score in the red zone, convert on a few more third downs, so we can get to the red zone. It’s just complete football.”
